At United Direct Solutions (UDS), our commitment to precision, data security, and operational excellence isn’t just a corporate strategy, it is woven into our foundational DNA. Long before we were handling complex data processing, omnichannel digital marketing, and high-volume variable data printing for healthcare and financial institutions, our founder, Lee Kirkwood, was learning the true definition of mission-critical execution.
As a Certified Veteran-Owned Business (VOSB) and a recognized diverse supplier, we frequently share how our veteran status benefits our clients, particularly those requiring strict compliance and military-grade security like HITRUST and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications. But behind that corporate certification is a deeply personal story of service, sacrifice, and leadership.
This Veteran Spotlight looks back at the journey of Lee Kirkwood: a banker, an elite fighter pilot, a master flight instructor, and the entrepreneurial force who built United Direct Solutions from the ground up.
Lee Kirkwood’s journey of service began in 1967 when he answered the call to serve his country and joined the United States Air Force. Demonstrating natural leadership and academic sharpness, he was quickly commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, marking the beginning of a highly decorated military career.
From commission, Lee entered the rigorous world of USAF Flight Training. Aviation training in the military demands split-second decision-making, absolute focus, and zero margin for error; traits that would later define his business philosophy. Lee excelled, earning recognition as an outstanding student pilot.
His performance caught the attention of military leadership. Upon graduation, instead of a standard deployment, Lee was handpicked for a prestigious assignment: serving as a flight instructor at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Teaching the next generation of military aviators at the Academy is an honor reserved for the best of the best. Lee met the challenge head-on, earning his Master Instructor Certification in record time. It was here that he mastered the art of breaking down incredibly complex systems into repeatable, standardized operational workflows—a skill set that would eventually transfer perfectly to managing high-volume data and print logistics.
In 1971, Lee transitioned to Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, where he served as a T-37 Flight Instructor. In this role, he was responsible for taking raw recruits and molding them into disciplined pilots capable of handling high-stress environments. Over the course of his active-duty service, Lee took on heavy leadership responsibilities, serving as both a Flight Commander and a Standardization Officer.
As a Standardization Officer, Lee’s entire job revolved around strict compliance, checking that every single pilot followed exact procedures perfectly to ensure safety and mission success. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is the exact same mentality required to maintain modern corporate compliance standards like ISO 9001-2015.
Lee completed his active-duty service at the rank of Captain, but his dedication to military aviation was far from over. In 1974, he joined the Kentucky Air National Guard, balancing a civilian career with tactical military service.
For the next 16 years, Lee served as both a pilot and instructor within the Guard, piloting advanced fighter aircraft and accumulating roughly 5,000 instructor and fighter flying hours. By the time he retired from military service in 1990, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Achieving this rank is a testament to more than two decades of elite leadership and service.
Retirement from the military wasn’t the end of Lee’s professional journey; it was simply a transition to a new mission. Before jumping full-time into business ownership, Lee spent time working in banking and insurance, gaining a deep understanding of corporate finance, risk management, and client relations.
But the entrepreneurial itch was strong. In the late 1970s, while still balancing his duties with the Air National Guard and working his day job as a bank officer, Lee spotted an opportunity. The U.S. Postal Service had introduced a 2-cent discount for companies that presented their mail pre-sorted in zip code sequence.
Armed with nothing but an entrepreneurial spirit and military discipline, Lee started sorting mail by hand in a rented basement space in Louisville during his evenings. By 1980, that small evening hustle officially became United Mail (now known as United Direct Solutions).
The same principles Lee used to manage a flight squadron, standardized workflows, strict attention to detail, and a commitment to security, were applied directly to the mailroom. Clients quickly realized that Lee’s operation was reliable, secure, and incredibly efficient. Over the next few decades, that small basement operation grew into a major regional direct marketing powerhouse, expanding its footprint into Cincinnati, acquiring new technologies, and eventually scaling to hundreds of employees and thousands of square feet of production space.
Today, United Direct Solutions has evolved into an industry leader in direct mail, print production, and digital marketing automation. While our technology has shifted from manual sorting tables to predictive data modeling and high-speed inkjet webs, our foundation remains anchored in the values Lee Kirkwood brought home from his service.
Being a Certified Veteran-Owned Business is a commitment to a higher standard of operational integrity.
“The discipline, procedure-driven focus, and leadership models built into our company by Lee Kirkwood are the reasons we successfully clear the highest security hurdles in data management today.”
